City Clerk Janice M. Winfrey stood at a podium inside the Northwest Activities Center at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday to deliver the first official update on Detroit’s Election Day operations. She confirmed that all 402 polling locations in the city opened on time this morning. Officials expect between 100,000 and 130,000 residents to cast ballots at these designated sites before the polls close at 8 p.m.
Winfrey reported that 25,515 Detroiters already voted during the early voting period. In addition, approximately 68,000 absentee ballots have already been tabulated. She anticipates that total mail-in ballot counts will reach 80,000. Staff will resume processing these ballots at Huntington Place at noon.
The clerk outlined a specific timeline for results. She stated that reporting should begin between 8:30 and 9 p.m. By 11 p.m., officials expect to have counted 90% to 95% of all ballots cast in the city. Winfrey noted that election workers expect to receive 8,000 to 12,000 absentee ballots on Election Day itself. The goal is to report those specific results by 4 a.m. on Wednesday.
Regarding voter access, Winfrey clarified that anyone in line before 8 p.m. has the right to cast a vote. She added that 26 Department of Justice monitors will be stationed at precincts across the city, alongside Congressional monitors. Her stated focus is providing an orderly experience and ensuring every eligible ballot is counted accurately.
Winfrey is scheduled to provide another update at 11:30 a.m. from the same location.
