The death of 21-year-old Terrell Peterson has left his family seeking clarity on why he was in a neighborhood he had recently left. Peterson was shot and killed in Cincinnati’s Walnut Hills district, a location his relatives said was unexpected given his recent move.
Petitioners gathered at the scene on Friday night to mourn the loss. The shooting occurred just after 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the 2400 block of Essex Place. Police discovered Peterson with a gunshot wound at the site. He was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he later died.
Cincinnati police have not released details about the suspect. The Homicide Unit is investigating the case and asks for information at 513-352-3542. The lack of a named suspect has left Peterson’s loved ones with more questions than answers regarding the circumstances of his death.
Dawnetha McClendon, Peterson’s grandmother, expressed confusion over his presence in Walnut Hills. She noted that he lived in Kentucky until recently. McClendon stated she tried to keep him away from the area because she considered the streets dangerous. She said he returned to the neighborhood only three months before his death.
McClendon described Peterson as a resilient individual who overcame a difficult start to life. She recalled that he was born on July 25, 2005, weighing only 1 pound and 3 ounces. She referred to him as her "dollar bill" because of his small size at birth. She said he fought through those early challenges and survived to build a life that included service in the National Guard.
The family highlighted the final moments of Peterson’s life before the shooting. McClendon said he told her he could not wait for Halloween and the upcoming holidays. She asked the person responsible for the shooting to explain why they stopped a heart that was still beating. She declared that the person would be caught.
Peterson’s death has affected the community across the tri-state area. Friends and family members attended the vigil to honor his memory. They described him as one of the kindest souls they had ever known. The gathering served as a public moment of grief for a young man who had just begun a new chapter in his life.
