Police in South Carolina have closed their investigation into the death of actor Hayden Panettiere, who died of an overdose, after a coroner found that it was accidental.
Greenville police said in a statement on Wednesday that the decision rested on the medical examiner's determination and on what the investigation itself turned up.
Panettiere, known for starring in the television series Heroes and Nashville, was pronounced dead on Aug. 16 at an apartment in Greenville. She was 36. Paramedics had found her unresponsive.
A coroner's report obtained by the Associated Press last month attributed her death to an accidental overdose of several drugs, including fentanyl. The report noted that she had been in rehab only weeks earlier. Her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach Hickerson were at the home.
Whether federal authorities are separately examining the case remains unclear. In a petition filed last month with a California court, Panettiere's ex-fiance, former boxer Wladimir Klitschko, said that federal law enforcement agents investigating her death had taken some of her property. He added that an unnamed person not related to her had also taken items with the aim of selling them.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment on Wednesday. Greenville police Sgt. Diana Munoz said she could not say whether any other agencies were investigating.
This month, the California court granted Klitschko legal status to safeguard Panettiere's property for their 11-year-old daughter, who is the actor's sole heir.
In a memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, published in May, Panettiere acknowledged being addicted to alcohol and having postpartum depression after her daughter was born in 2014. The girl began living full-time with Klitschko when she was two.
Panettiere's father told investigators that, when she died, she had plans to travel to Ukraine days later to visit her daughter.
