Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, announced her endorsement of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins on Tuesday. She also supported his nonpartisan running mate for lieutenant governor, Zac Johnson. The move places the senator behind a Democrat in a state where President Donald Trump has already backed Republican Bernadette Wilson.

Murkowski told KTUU that Kreiss-Tomkins is a common-sense leader with a proven ability to work with others. She stated that the state's future is too important to be held back by partisan divisions. A campaign press release noted her belief that Kreiss-Tomkins understands how to listen to different perspectives to find common ground.

The senator highlighted the need for a serious discussion regarding Alaska's fiscal future. She pointed to the cost of energy and economic growth as key issues that require attention. Murkowski said she believes the candidate is committed to serving all Alaskans, regardless of their party affiliation.

She encouraged voters from every political stripe to examine the tickets of Kreiss-Tomkins and Johnson. The senator described the pair as leaders who would prioritize the state above all else. She expressed pride in supporting them for the upcoming contest.

Kreiss-Tomkins welcomed the support in a statement from his campaign. He said Alaskans deserve a government that can resolve disagreements and make progress on important issues. He committed to working with the congressional delegation, the legislature, industry, and communities across the state.

The candidate emphasized that moving Alaska forward requires cooperation rather than political conflict. The race will use a ranked-choice voting system, and multiple Republicans are currently running against the Democratic and nonpartisan tickets.
