The CIF Southern Section released its football playoff brackets for all 14 divisions on Sunday morning, and three Compton-area teams will open at home on Friday, Nov. 6. Games start at 7 p.m. unless noted.
Compton (9-1), the Hub City League champion, will host Ramona (7-3) in the first round of Division 9. The Tarbabes have won four straight games by a combined score of 183-26. Senior running back Edward Rivera, who is committed to Sacramento State, scored 28 touchdowns in the regular season and has 1,503 yards of total offense, including 1,107 rushing.
Coach Calvin Bryant called it "a good matchup" and noted that Ramona reached the championship game in the same division last year. "They're going to be fired up coming to Compton," he said. "We must stay composed and execute our game. It's going to be a physical game."
Dominguez (6-4), second in the Hub City League, will host Pacific (7-3) in Division 11. The Dons are on a three-game winning streak. Centennial (5-5), an at-large team from the Hub City League, is the No. 4 seed in Division 14 and will host Pioneer (3-7).
Thirteen teams from the Long Beach area made the playoffs. In Division 1, St. John Bosco (7-3) is the No. 4 seed after finishing third in the Trinity League. The Braves have a first-round bye and will host No. 5 Orange Lutheran (5-5) in the quarterfinals on Nov. 13. Orange Lutheran beat Bosco 20-19 in last season's quarterfinals, but Bosco won 28-14 in league play on Oct. 9. A semifinal against No. 1 Santa Margarita (10-0), which beat Bosco 21-7 on Oct. 16, is possible.
Long Beach Poly (6-4), the Moore League champion, is the No. 15 seed in Division 3 and visits No. 2 Norco (7-3). The Jackrabbits have won four straight, beating their four league opponents by a combined 199-0, all by shutout. "I like the draw," first-year coach Travon Patterson said. "One game at a time and play Poly football."
Downey (6-4), second in the Gateway League, is the No. 4 seed in Division 4 and hosts Newbury Park (6-4). The Vikings lost 20-14 to La Serna, the top seed in Division 3, in the Gateway League title game Friday. In Division 7, La Mirada (7-3) hosts Paloma Valley (7-3), Millikan (3-7) visits La Cañada (8-2), and Paramount (9-1), the No. 16 seed and Mid-Cities League champion, travels to No. 1 San Dimas (8-2). The Pirates have won eight in a row, including over local playoff teams Dominguez, Gahr and Bellflower.
Bellflower (7-3), the No. 2 seed in Division 8, will host Valley Christian (6-3-1) in the area's only all-local first-round game. Valley Christian won the Division 9 title last season and is coming off a 71-68 loss to Heritage Christian. Bellflower coach Keith Miller said the Buccaneers feel good about their seed and can make a title run "if we can stay healthy."
Elsewhere, Gahr (6-3-1) hosts Norte Vista (5-5) in Division 10, and Artesia (8-1), the Rio Vista League champion, hosts Heritage in Division 12. The Pioneers have won six straight, including a 5-0 run in league play.
