Cam Wallace rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown to lead Penn State past Purdue 31-17 on Saturday. The victory marked the first Big Ten win for the Nittany Lions under head coach Matt Campbell and snapped a four-game losing streak.
Wallace had been sidelined for nearly two seasons after fracturing both legs. He returned this year but saw limited action, finishing the season with just 22 carries for 125 yards before Saturday. Campbell noted that Wallace dominated the inside running game during the bye week and Wednesday practices, which set the stage for his performance against the Boilermakers.
"I've been through a lot in my career, so everything is just falling into place for the work that I put in," Wallace said. "I'm just happy for myself and this team."
The Nittany Lions exploited a Purdue defense that ranked 119th in the country. Penn State recorded 269 rushing yards at 5.3 yards per carry, their best rushing output since their opening loss to Wisconsin. Rocco Becht and Carson Hansen also scored on the ground, while Becht threw a touchdown pass to Andrew Rappleyea.
Purdue trailed early after Rappleyea caught a short score to cap the opening drive. Wallace followed with a 48-yard run that set up Becht for a six-yard touchdown, giving Penn State a 14-7 lead. Purdue tied the game at 14 when Jalil Hall returned a blocked punt 31 yards with 8:52 left in the first half.
Penn State drove 65 yards on the next possession to take a 21-14 lead into halftime on a one-yard run by Hansen. The defense shifted momentum in the third quarter when Jamison Patton intercepted Ryan Browne at midfield. Barker converted the stop into a 44-yard field goal, extending the lead to 24-14.
Wallace added another touchdown with just under 10 minutes remaining to make it 31-14. Jacobo Echeverria Lozano kicked a 49-yard field goal late in the game to set the final score at 31-17. Purdue, which had not beaten Penn State since 2004, allowed only 33 rushing yards but could not overcome the deficit.
Penn State visits Washington on Saturday, while Purdue hosts Maryland.
