Deborah Lane has formally entered the race for the 42nd Ward aldermanic seat, submitting the minimum 473 required signatures by the October 26 deadline. This filing marks the first time since 2007 that Alderman Brendan Reilly faces a confirmed challenger on the municipal ballot.
Lane, a former union leader and current senior advisor to Illinois Treasurer Mike Frerichs, is seeking to displace the incumbent who has represented the Downtown and River North district for nearly two decades. Her campaign platform focuses on balancing the ward's role as a commercial hub with its function as a residential neighborhood.
Reilly, who recently lost the Illinois primary for Cook County Board President to Toni Preckwinkle, has maintained a distinct political distance from Mayor Brandon Johnson. The alderman has opposed several of the mayor's progressive initiatives, including a proposed corporate head tax and new renter protection ordinances. In 2026, Reilly joined 30 other alderpeople in passing the city budget independently of the mayor's office.
The 42nd Ward currently hosts the temporary gaming facility for the planned Bally's casino. Reilly has been a vocal opponent of this development, a stance that may influence voter sentiment in the district. Lane brings a background in labor representation, having served as secretary-treasurer for Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308, which represents more than 3,000 Chicago Transit Authority employees.
Reilly is not unfamiliar with opposition, though previous challengers have withdrawn. In the 2023 cycle, Chris Cleary dropped out after failing to secure sufficient donor support. Cleary later described a two-hour meeting with Reilly to discuss the ward's future before ending his bid.
The electoral process now moves to the verification phase. Candidates who believe a petition contains errors must file challenges by November 2. The Chicago Board of Elections is tasked with certifying the final list of candidates for the ballot by December 17.
If Lane's petition survives any legal challenges, she will appear on the February ballot as the sole opponent to Reilly. The outcome of this race will determine whether the longtime alderman continues his tenure or if the ward shifts to new leadership.
