Everton defeated Newcastle United 3-1 on Wednesday to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they will play League Two side Fleetwood.
Everton took the lead in the 34th minute when James Garner struck low into the far corner from the edge of the box after Newcastle defender Amar Dedic misplaced a clearance under pressure from Tyrique George. It was Garner's first goal since January. Hayden Hackney added a second just before halftime, tapping in from close range after Thierno Barry set him up on a counterattack. Barry made it 3-0 in the 69th minute, collecting Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's cross and finishing from inside the box for his seventh goal in 11 appearances this season. Dan Burn headed a consolation for Newcastle in the 88th minute.
Everton started the match without Jack Grealish, who was omitted from the squad following an unauthorized absence from training that the club treated as a breach of discipline. Newcastle, managed by Matthias Jaissle, brought 8,000 travelling supporters to the fixture and controlled the opening spell. Harvey Barnes tested Jordan Pickford with a header, and Pickford also saved from Joe Willock and Fabian Schar. Vitalii Mykolenko blocked a Jacob Ramsey effort. Hackney had Everton's first clear chance in the 20th minute, scuffing a close-range attempt from Mykolenko's cross.
The match shifted in the minutes before halftime. James Tarkowski dispossessed William Osula as the Newcastle forward prepared to shoot from close range. Everton broke upfield, and Hackney fed Garner for the opener. Newcastle then appealed for a penalty when Barnes went down under a challenge from Dewsbury-Hall, but referee Farai Hallam waved the appeals away. Seconds later, Hallam played advantage after Ramsey fouled Dewsbury-Hall, and Barry delivered a cross from the left that Hackney converted.
Jaissle introduced Anthony Elanga, Joelinton and Yoane Wissa at halftime. Wissa tested Pickford nine minutes into the second period. Newcastle continued to press without creating further clear openings before Barry finished the contest. Burn's late header was the only blemish for Everton.
Everton have never won the Carabao Cup. Their most recent major trophy was the FA Cup in 1995. Newcastle won the competition in 2025.
Fleetwood, a League Two club, eliminated Arsenal in the previous round on Tuesday. Everton will host Fleetwood in the quarter-final.
The two sides meet again in the Premier League at St James' Park on Monday night.
