Bloomington police arrested one person following a shooting that injured seven individuals early Sunday morning near Indiana University. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. in the area of Kirkwood Avenue and Grant Street, according to Deputy Chief of Police Ryan Pedigo.
Pedigo stated that officers heard multiple gunshots while a large crowd was gathered. Witnesses reported seeing a man with a gun running from the scene. Investigators later recovered shell casings from two distinct firearms. While the exact number of rounds fired remains unknown, witnesses told detectives they heard between four and six shots.
The person taken into custody was booked on a preliminary charge of resisting law enforcement and possession of a firearm. Pedigo noted that the detainee faces a pending felony weapons charge in Hendricks County. It is not yet confirmed whether this individual is the one who discharged the weapons during the incident.
The seven victims consist of four males and three females, with ages ranging from 17 to 27. All were reported to be from the Indianapolis area. Pedigo confirmed that none of the injured are believed to be Indiana University students. Those who spoke to detectives said they traveled to Bloomington to celebrate Halloween.
All seven victims were last reported in stable condition. Three required surgery. Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage from locations along Kirkwood Avenue to identify the shooter.
