Jordanian security forces arrested three armed suspects on Monday following a shootout in the Karak governorate. The arrests stem from a violent attack on a Greek Orthodox church earlier this week that resulted in nine deaths and 40 injuries. State television reported that the suspects were found hiding in an abandoned house.
The initial assault occurred on Friday during a funeral service in the village of Hamoud, located approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Amman. Witnesses described the shooting as lasting several minutes. The Public Security Directorate stated that the suspects refused to surrender when located by authorities. Instead, they opened fire on the responding security teams. Officers returned fire, wounding all three men before securing their custody.
The directorate announced that no security personnel were injured during the Monday confrontation. Investigators recovered multiple firearms and ammunition from the suspects. The agency did not name the individuals or confirm specific links to any Islamist militant groups, despite earlier characterizing the violence as the work of extremist terrorists.
King Abdullah directed security forces to respond with an iron fist to the rare attack on the Christian minority. The monarch is a key U.S. partner in the regional fight against Islamist militant groups. Jordan has historically maintained stability in the Middle East, though authorities have previously thwarted several similar plots. The attack stands out as a significant escalation in a country where such violence is infrequent.
The Public Security Directorate issued a statement declaring that terrorism has no place among the people. The directorate added that the suspects had met their just fate. Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said officials are currently reviewing the conditions that drove young people toward extremism. He stated that authorities would hold anyone found to have participated in the attack accountable.
No group has claimed responsibility for the Friday shooting. The investigation continues as officials examine the chain of events leading to the ambush at the church in Hamoud.
