Real Madrid defeated Racing Santander 3-0 on Sunday to maintain pressure on Barcelona, the current leader in La Liga. The match took place in Santander, where Spanish football held a one-minute silence before each weekend fixture to honor the victims of a recent fatal train accident in Spain.
Kylian Mbappé opened the scoring in the 11th minute. He converted a penalty kick after being fouled in the box, extending his season total to 12 league goals. Later in the first half, Mbappé assisted Jude Bellingham for the second goal. Yan Diomandé, a summer transfer signing, struck a powerful shot before halftime to seal the 3-0 victory.
Jose Mourinho acknowledged the result could have been larger, noting that the team avoided potential complications. The manager stated that the win provided valuable rest for players ahead of upcoming fixtures. He explained that his mind was already focused on the Champions League match against AEK Athens in the Greek capital.
Mourinho said he left out players who are not expected to start on Wednesday. He described the league match as a gift and expressed hope that four or five changes would be sufficient to secure a result. The manager emphasized that Spanish football expects domestic teams to win their matches.
The victory keeps Real Madrid in third place in the standings. The club trails Atlético Madrid by one point and sits three points behind Barcelona. Barcelona has been scoring at a high rate recently, maintaining its lead over its rivals.
The match occurred after a period of scrutiny for Mbappé. On Tuesday, he apologized for comments in which he referred to Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China, as a dictator. The remarks drew criticism and resulted in the loss of sponsorship deals with Chinese companies. This incident followed his second-place finish in the men's Ballon d'Or voting, where he trailed Harry Kane of Bayern Munich.
In another La Liga match, Getafe came from behind to defeat Sevilla 3-1. Martín Satriano provided an assist for Enes Ünal to equalize and later scored a goal himself. Orel Mangala added a third goal in the final minutes to complete the comeback.
