Pipo Nguyen-Duy, a studio art and photography professor at Oberlin College and Conservatory, was found dead inside a Lorain County home on Tuesday morning. Police also discovered a woman deceased at the same location. A 31-year-old man from Ashland, Oregon, identified as Daniel Jones, is in custody while charges are pending.
The sequence of events began around 8:57 a.m. when Oberlin Police responded to the college conservatory parking lot at 77 E College Street. Officers assisted fire crews with a vehicle that was smoking and potentially on fire. Police attempted to locate the registered owner, Jones, to perform a welfare check on his family.
Jones was found in the 200 block of Shipherd Circle at 10:19 a.m. and taken into custody. During the welfare check at 33 South Pleasant Street, officers discovered the two victims. Nguyen-Duy was located on the first floor, while the woman was found on the second floor. Both had sustained gunshot wounds.
Oberlin College confirmed Nguyen-Duy as a long-time faculty member. The campus was placed under a shelter-in-place order during the initial response. Police lifted the order after confirming there was no ongoing danger to the community or the school grounds. The Lorain County coroner’s office is involved in the investigation.
The investigation remains ongoing. No formal charges have been filed against Jones yet. The specific relationship between the victims and the suspect has not been publicly detailed in initial police reports.
