President Donald Trump will hold his final two campaign events of the midterm cycle in Iowa and Kansas on Sunday. The rallies are scheduled for the day before Tuesday's elections, with stops in Dubuque, Iowa, and Salina, Kansas. The Republican Party confirmed the itinerary, setting the start time for the Dubuque event at 2 p.m. Central and the Salina event at 9 p.m. Central.
Trump initially planned to skip these last-minute appearances. He reversed that decision shortly before the events were finalized. The moves come as the race for the Senate seats in both states tightens. Republicans view these two states as essential to maintaining their majority in the upper chamber.
Recent polling data shows the contests are closer than expected. A Marist poll indicates that Republican Representative Ashley Hinson trails Democratic challenger Josh Turek by three points in Iowa. In Kansas, Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton holds a slight lead over incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall. This is the first time Hamilton has been ahead in the polls for that race.
House Speaker Mike Johnson dismissed the negative polling trends. He stated that voters on the ground do not reflect the survey results. "I’ve seen the voters on the ground. I’m telling you, the polls are wrong. They’re inaccurate. They’re underrepresenting Republicans," Johnson said.
Historical data shows Iowa last sent a Democrat to the Senate in 2008. Kansas last elected a Democratic senator nearly a century ago. Trump has won the presidential election in Iowa three times and in Kansas twice. His current approval rating stands at approximately 34% according to the latest Quinnipiac poll.
The rallies will conclude the president's direct involvement in the 2026 midterm campaign. Voters in both states will head to the polls on Tuesday to determine the final composition of the Senate.
