Anthropic targets business workflows with new AI agent app

The company's latest product focuses on professional task automation rather than personal errands, aiming to capture a segment of the market often overlooked by consumer-focused rivals.

Anthropic has officially entered the crowded arena of standalone AI applications with the launch of Claude Duet, a tool specifically engineered for professionals and small business owners. By releasing this new agent, the company is positioning itself against a growing list of competitors, including Meta’s Muse, OpenAI’s Dots, and several emerging players like Hark and Fo, all of which are vying for user attention in a market that sees new assistants debut weekly.

The primary strategic distinction of Claude Duet is its focus on work-related automation rather than personal lifestyle management. Anthropic explicitly notes that the agent is not designed to handle casual errands, such as booking flight tickets, nor does it provide a real-time visual feed of its browser activity. This approach contrasts with personal assistants like Instinct, which prioritize domestic or leisure tasks. Instead, Duet is built to manage professional workflows, aiming to reduce the administrative burden on business users by handling complex data processing and coordination.

A core feature of the application is its ability to operate autonomously in the background. Duet utilizes its own virtual machine to execute tasks while the user continues with their day, only interrupting them when approval is required. The system is designed to be proactive, monitoring ongoing projects to generate daily briefings, construct data dashboards, and suggest specific actions based on the user’s existing information. This shift reflects a broader industry movement away from simple chatbots toward agents that can actually perform work on a user's behalf.

The technical foundation of Claude Duet rests on the Claude Opus 5.5 model, which enables the agent to interface with a vast ecosystem of external tools. The app connects to more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace, allowing it to integrate deeply with the software stacks that small businesses already use. Furthermore, the agent can execute online purchases using digital payment methods such as Stripe’s Link or Shopify’s Shop Pay, though it is restricted from trading securities or transferring funds between bank accounts. Sensitive financial steps require explicit user consent before proceeding.

Security and data privacy are central to the product’s architecture, particularly given the sensitive nature of business data. Anthropic introduced a new classifier that scans each message to prevent the leakage of confidential information. By default, the agent is programmed to decline requests that involve sharing credit card numbers or government-issued identification, creating a layer of protection against common data exposure risks. This feature addresses a key concern for business users who are hesitant to grant AI agents broad access to their financial and personal records.

The launch of Claude Duet highlights the intensifying competition in the AI agent space, where the definition of utility is expanding from simple conversation to active task completion. While some rivals maintain a consumer-first approach, Anthropic is doubling down on the professional segment, a strategy that aligns with the growing demand for AI that can directly impact operational efficiency. The distinction between personal and business agents is becoming a key differentiator in a market that is rapidly maturing.

Currently, Claude Duet is available in a research preview phase, accessible via iOS, Android, and the web through Claude.ai. The service is restricted to Pro and Max tier customers, and interested users must join a waitlist to gain access. This phased rollout allows Anthropic to gather feedback and refine the agent’s performance in real-world business scenarios before a wider public release. For the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley business communities, this represents a new option for automating routine tasks, potentially saving time and reducing overhead in a competitive economic landscape.

As the AI industry continues to evolve, the focus on specialized, role-specific agents suggests a future where different AI tools are tailored to specific professional needs. Anthropic’s entry into the market signals its confidence in the commercial viability of its technology, aiming to prove that a dedicated business agent can deliver tangible value beyond the capabilities of general-purpose chat interfaces. The coming months will likely reveal how well Duet performs in practical applications and whether it can secure a significant share of the professional user base.
