Billions on the Table: The $965 Billion Valuation Windfall for Anthropic’s Early Backers

At its latest private market price, key investors in the AI lab already hold stakes worth billions, with some seeing returns of over ninety-fold ahead of a potential IPO this year.

The biggest story in tech circles right now isn't just the upcoming public listing of Anthropic, expected to land at a valuation of up to $2 trillion this year. It is the sheer scale of the windfall that early and later-stage investors have already secured. Even before the company hits the public market, the stakes held by its venture capitalists and early backers are already valued in the billions. According to data from Bloomberg, the company’s latest private market valuation stands at $965 billion, and the numbers for its key backers are staggering.

To understand the magnitude of these gains, it helps to look back at where things started. Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, invested in Anthropic’s Series A back in 2021. At that time, PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at just $461 million. Today, Schmidt holds approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, that single slice of ownership is worth nearly $10 billion. It is a stark reminder of how quickly the AI landscape has shifted from startup to powerhouse.

Later-stage investors have seen their portfolios explode in value as well. Iconiq wrote a massive $6 billion check to Anthropic last year, when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That late-stage bet is now worth $17 billion, with the potential to double again once the IPO goes through. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested over $1 billion in total. Their stake has grown to a value of $14 billion, cementing their position as one of the biggest winners in the space.

Newer entrants to the investor pool have also seen rapid returns. Sequoia, the renowned venture firm, first backed Anthropic only earlier this year, when the valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning their investment has already more than doubled in value. Similarly, Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, put $35 million into the 2023 Series C round. They have since added another $400 million, resulting in a stake now worth billions. Note that Kutcher left the firm this year to launch his own VC venture.

Perhaps the most dramatic multiple belongs to Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. They invested $75 million in that same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has ballooned by more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. These figures illustrate just how much value has been created in a short period.

As the company prepares for its public debut, the focus will shift to how these private gains translate into public market performance. The expectation of a valuation near $2 trillion suggests that these numbers could grow significantly higher. For now, however, the existing backers are sitting on one of the most lucrative portfolios in modern tech history.

The next step is clear: watch for the official IPO filing and the final pricing of the shares. Until then, the private market valuations stand as the benchmark for these massive returns. Investors across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley, and beyond, are keeping a close eye on whether the public market will validate the $965 billion figure or push it even higher.
