Chris Brown received an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months on October 26. The verdict at Southwark Crown Court in London followed his guilty plea to affray. He will not serve time behind bars immediately unless he violates the court's conditions during the suspension period.
The incident occurred in February 2023 at Tape nightclub. Prosecutors stated that Brown struck music producer Abraham Diaw twice in the head with a tequila bottle. Surveillance footage presented in court showed the confrontation lasted approximately 20 seconds.
Judge Tony Baumgartner noted the danger of using a glass bottle on a person's head. He warned that the attack could have caused more severe injuries. The judge stated that Brown's fame did not entitle him to special treatment. He acknowledged Brown's previous convictions but highlighted his recent clean record.
The court considered several factors before suspending the sentence. These included Brown's guilty plea, stable employment, and charitable work. Brown had previously denied more serious charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. Those charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
Brown's vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, was also sentenced for the same incident. Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months. Both men faced initial allegations of assault occasioning actual bodily harm before pleading to the lesser public order offense.
Fans gathered outside the courthouse to watch the proceedings. Supporters cheered as Brown left the building, while others questioned the outcome. The legal matter adds to Brown's history of public legal issues, including a 2009 guilty plea for assaulting Rihanna.
The suspended sentence remains active for the next 12 months. If Brown breaches the court's conditions during this timeframe, he may be required to serve the eight months in prison.
