Senator Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is currently hospitalized after suffering a stroke. His office confirmed the incident on Sunday, noting that the lawmaker is expected to make a full recovery.
Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, provided the initial details in a written statement. She explained that Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon. He was at a local hospital by the time doctors identified the stroke. The senator was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring. Herwitt stated that he is responding well to treatment.
Murphy has been an active presence in Washington and on the road this year. He serves as a key surrogate for Democratic candidates during the midterm cycle. He also recently returned from a tour of the Middle East. Following that trip, he warned that President Trump would significantly escalate military action in Iran after the elections.
This health event joins a series of medical issues affecting members of Congress in recent years. Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spent months in hospital care and rehabilitation earlier in the year. Representative Tom Kean, R-N.J., was absent from the Capitol for a similar duration while undergoing treatment for depression.
The 2022 cycle saw a cluster of similar diagnoses among Democrats. Senator Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-candidate John Fetterman were all hospitalized for strokes during that period. Murphy’s hospitalization marks another instance of high-profile health challenges within the Senate.
