Cure Releases Fourteenth Studio Album

The Cure released their fourteenth studio album, Songs of a Lost World, on November 1, 2024. The record marked the band's first new music in 16 years.

The date also recalls several other moments in music history. In 1968, George Harrison released his debut solo effort, Wonderwall Music, on the Apple label. The album featured mostly instrumentals, with contributions from Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, and an unaccredited banjo performance by Peter Tork of The Monkees.

In 1969, Elvis Presley reached number one on the US singles chart with "Suspicious Minds." The track became his 18th US number one hit and peaked at number two in the UK. That same year, Matthews Southern Comfort topped the UK singles chart with their cover of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock," which remained the group's only number one hit in that country.

Ray Pohlman, an American session musician and arranger, died of heart failure on November 1, 1990, at age 60. Pohlman was credited as the first electric bass player in Los Angeles studios during the 1950s. He was a member of The Wrecking Crew, a collective that recorded with Phil Spector and The Beach Boys.

More recently, Metal Hammer magazine published a list of the top ten rock and heavy metal mustaches in 2012. The list placed Freddie Mercury in the number one spot. It also included mustaches worn by Frank Zappa, James Hetfield, Lemmy, and all members of Black Sabbath except Ozzy Osbourne. Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rick Allen of Def Leppard also share November 1 birthdays.
