The death toll in Gaza stands at 74,564, a figure cited by a group of former United States officials as they issued a direct challenge to the Democratic Party ahead of the 2028 presidential election. In a joint statement released on Wednesday, 12 former leaders who resigned between late 2023 and 2024 asked potential nominees to denounce the administration of former President Joe Biden. The group, which calls itself the Gaza Resignees, argues that the next candidate must formally reject the policies that defined the previous term.

The former officials stated that they left their posts due to what they described as illegal and unconditional support for Israel’s actions. They noted that several rights groups, scholars, and United Nations inquiries have assessed the war as genocide. The statement emphasized that basic accountability requires ensuring that those who caused harm from high levels of government cannot simply return to power. The group specifically asked candidates to commit to not hiring any official who was directly responsible for enabling the military operations.

The resignees accused former policy architects of whitewashing their roles in the conflict. They claimed these individuals worked resolutely toward illegal and wrongful ends in violation of both US and international law. Many of these officials are now pursuing paths back into policymaking. The group argued that these leaders stayed silent when they had the opportunity to defend US laws. This silence, they said, allowed the administration to continue its support despite growing criticism.

The Biden administration, which served from 2021 to 2024, faced pushback from progressive lawmakers and activist groups after the war began in October 2023. US Representative Rashida Tlaib and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have opposed the continued US support for Israel. This support has persisted since President Donald Trump was re-elected last year. The former officials see the current political climate as a reason to set clear boundaries for the next Democratic administration.

The statement outlines three specific oaths for Democratic candidates. First, they must pledge to uphold the Constitution and pursue the national interest. Second, they must acknowledge US complicity in the genocide through arms, funding, and diplomatic backing. Third, they must build an administration that reflects US interests. This final point requires creating no space for those who were architects, leaders, defenders, or key enablers of the unconditional support policies.

The group’s demand is specific about the exclusion of certain individuals from future roles. They want the next nominee to define the composition of their cabinet based on this new standard. The 74,564 deaths and 175,770 injuries reported by Palestinian health authorities serve as the backdrop for this political maneuvering. The former officials believe that without this commitment, the same policy errors will repeat under a new administration.
