Jennifer Lawrence has described a moment on a film set when she found people present during a nude scene who had not been approved to be there. She shared the story during an appearance on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast.
Lawrence said the discovery led her to "come down hard" on the crew. The episode remains one of the defining moments of her acting career, she said, because it taught her why speaking up matters.
The conversation began with a question about whether she has grown more comfortable advocating for herself over the years. Lawrence said flexibility is part of the job. She pointed to director Lynne Ramsay asking her to cut her hair, get mullet bangs and dye it platinum blonde for "Die My Love." "That's the gig," she said. Even so, she added, she speaks up more now because she is aware of the place she holds in the industry.
Explaining her reaction on the set in question, Lawrence said the issue was one of principle. If that standard is not set, she asked, what happens to an 18-year-old unknown who arrives and finds people present who are not approved? That young performer, she said, would face a choice between speaking up and risking a reputation for being difficult, or allowing people she is uncomfortable with to see her naked. Lawrence said it was important to her to explain to the crew why the situation was not acceptable.
Lawrence has appeared in nude and sex scenes before. Last year she drew wide attention for remarks about working without an intimacy coordinator on "Die My Love," in which she stars opposite Robert Pattinson.
Speaking on the "Las Culturistas" podcast, she said she felt very safe with Pattinson. She described him as not "pervy" and as deeply in love with his partner, Suki Waterhouse, and said the two mostly talked about their kids and relationships. She said she would probably have wanted an intimacy coordinator if there had been any awkwardness over whether he thought she liked him. She also said many male actors take offense if a woman does not want to sleep with them, and that a kind of punishment follows. Pattinson, she said, was not like that.
On the nude scenes in the film, Lawrence said she does not care about nudity and is not sensitive about it. She wanted Ramsay to have total artistic freedom, she said, and being pregnant removed much of her vanity anxiety. Before "No Hard Feelings," she recalled, she was dieting, avoiding carbs and working out. While making "Die My Love" she was pregnant and working 15 hours a day, and simply tired.
She also recalled being sent a close-up image showing cellulite and being asked whether the team should touch it up. Her answer, she said, was no: "That's an ass."
