The Kankakee Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace is recruiting volunteers to assist with bed deliveries scheduled for this month. The nonprofit aims to ensure children in the community have proper sleeping arrangements before the holiday season begins.
Tim Zydek, the chapter's co-president, stated that the organization has inventory ready for installation. "We've got beds ready to go, but we need helping hands to get them into the homes of local children who need them," Zydek wrote in a press release. The group’s primary objective is to move children off the floor and into beds.
Five delivery windows are currently open for sign-up. Volunteers can choose from slots on Saturday, November 7, from 9:30 a.m. to noon; Thursday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Sunday, November 15, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, November 19, from 10 a.m. to noon; and Saturday, November 21, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The chapter also coordinates group delivery opportunities.
The release clarified that participants do not need to construct the furniture to contribute. "Help us deliver and assemble them so another child in our community has a bed to call their own," the text read. Interested individuals can register at a specific link provided by the organization.
Founded in March 2018 by Zydek, the Kankakee nonprofit operates under the motto "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town." The group averages 200 to 250 beds built annually. Additional information and available dates are listed on the organization's website and Facebook page.
