Ohio State defeated the University of Illinois Chicago 81-34 on Monday night, a victory driven by aggressive defensive pressure and a relentless pursuit of the offensive rebound. The Buckeyes scored 36 points directly from UIC turnovers and added 23 points from second-chance opportunities after securing 25 offensive boards. This approach allowed the team to control the pace of the game and limit the Flames to just 34 total points in their season opener.

The match began with a 7-7 tie in the first quarter, but the balance shifted quickly. Ohio State closed the opening period with a 20-0 run, forcing six turnovers during that stretch. Head Coach Craig McGuff noted that the team’s early intensity was the key factor. He stated, “I thought we had a good start. Our focus and intensity were good from the tip.” The defensive effort continued through the second quarter, as Ohio State held UIC to six points. The Buckeyes entered halftime with a 50-13 lead.

The defensive strategy extended to the second half, where the team outscored UIC by 10 points. Senior guard Kennedy Cambridge, who had recently broken the program’s single-season steals record, recorded a game-high three steals. Her performance highlighted the team's ability to disrupt the opposing offense. McGuff explained that the pressure forced UIC to play faster than intended. He said, “We picked up our intensity and started to bother them a little bit. We sped them up and got them out of rhythm.”

Offensive efficiency from beyond the arc remained a challenge for the Buckeyes. The team connected on only six of its 31 three-point attempts. Despite this shooting struggle, the offensive rebounding effort compensated for missed shots. McGuff identified rebounding as a primary focus during the offseason. He said, “It’s been an emphasis for us to be a better rebounding team in general. Offensive rebounding is a part of that, and I was happy to see us get in there.”

Freshman Sydney Mobley provided a scoring boost in her collegiate debut, finishing with 14 points. Mobley attributed her comfort level to support from her veteran teammates. She said, “My teammates gave me confidence, and just telling me to get out there and do what I do really helped me be comfortable out there.” Junior center Elsa Lemmilä offered a perspective on the team's development, noting that communication remains a key area for improvement. She said, “We could have still played better. Something that we have put an emphasis on in practice a lot is communication, and it’s something we still need to get better at.”

Ohio State will remain in the Schottenstein Center for its next contest. The Buckeyes face Central Michigan on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
