Andoni Iraola’s debut at Anfield ended in defeat, but his decision to start Trey Nyoni over veterans marked a sharp departure from the previous regime.

Liverpool fans left Anfield with a defeat after Arsenal secured a win on a night where the visitors managed to contain their hosts. The result extends the gap at the top of the Premier League, with Arsenal now holding a commanding position while Manchester City deals with internal issues.
The match began with a defensive error that set the tone. Alisson, the Liverpool goalkeeper, attempted a pass that was both delayed and inaccurate. Martin Odegaard intercepted the ball and challenged Jeremy Jacquet. Odegaard won possession, and Declan Rice quickly moved the ball to the outside. Rice’s cross found Kai Havertz at the back post, where the Norwegian striker tapped it in to give Arsenal the lead.
Liverpool appeared tense before that goal, but the concession forced a more urgent response. The first half saw Arsenal defend against a series of Liverpool attacks. The most active player for Liverpool in that period was Trey Nyoni. The 19-year-old midfielder made his first Premier League start for the club.
Nyoni’s inclusion caused a stir before the match began. He started in place of Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, who had returned to fitness. This choice contrasted sharply with the approach of Andoni Iraola’s predecessor, Arne Slot. Slot maintained a fixed starting lineup for much of his tenure, rarely rotating his core group.
Data from the previous season shows the difference in squad usage. Slot used 24 players to win the league title. In his final season, Jurgen Klopp used 30 players. During Slot’s title-winning campaign, only 14 players started at least 10 league matches. Under Klopp in his last season, 20 players reached that threshold. Slot’s preference for a settled team reportedly reduced internal competition within the squad.
Iraola has adopted a different method, rewarding players who show high work rates. Gravenberch was dropped from the lineup after errors in the opening match against Newcastle. Lewis Koumas has played in 12 matches this season, including five starts, due to his high intensity.
Nyoni faced early scrutiny on the field. He made a heavy challenge on Odegaard in his first touch and committed another foul shortly after. A strict referee might have sent him off, but the officials allowed the game to flow. As the match progressed, Nyoni’s quick distribution helped Liverpool control possession. His performance highlighted a gap in Liverpool’s midfield since the sale of Fabinho in 2023.
Arsenal defended efficiently against Liverpool’s pressure. They faced 34 crosses in the match and dealt with 32 of them. Liverpool had one clear chance before halftime when Alexis Mac Allister headed over the bar from a cross by Milos Kerkez. Another opportunity for Liverpool was stopped when Jurrien Timber pulled the shirt of Bradley Barcola, preventing Alexander Isak from reaching the ball. Isak did not signal for a review by Video Assistant Referee, a decision that sparked debate after the match.
The postmatch conversation also turned to a foul by Noni Madueke on Mac Allister. Mac Allister fell to the ground after a headbutt, but Madueke escaped a red card. This outcome contrasted with recent decisions where Rodrigo Bentancur and Yegor Yarmolyuk were sent off for similar actions. The inconsistency in refereeing decisions remains a point of contention for clubs relying on the system.
