Philadelphia 76ers fans watched their supporting cast carry the team to a 6-1 start this weekend. The squad defeated the Charlotte Hornets 109-104 on Saturday, adding to a 98-93 victory over the New York Knicks on Friday. These wins came without the contributions of LeBron James and Joel Embiid, who sat out both games due to injuries and load management.
The roster took shape over the summer with the addition of Jaylen Brown and the drafting of VJ Edgecombe. Coach Nick Nurse has emphasized the importance of complementary players since practice began. The team has relied on this depth as stars have rotated out of lineups. The current record of 6-1 reflects the impact of these secondary options during the early season.
Dean Wade started both weekend games after Jaylen Brown sat out Friday due to a sore knee. On Friday, Wade did not score, take a shot, or attempt a free throw in 26 minutes. He recorded three steals, two rebounds, and an assist. He guarded OG Anunoby, holding him to nine points on four field goals in 34 minutes. Jalen Brunson shot 8-for-22 from the field as Wade switched onto him in pick-and-roll situations.
Wade’s role expanded on Saturday. He posted a career-high 10 assists and five rebounds in the win over Charlotte. LeBron James praised Wade’s defensive positioning and ability to create extra shots. James called Wade a player who makes winning plays for any team.
Anfernee Simons provided scoring energy from the bench in both games. He combined for 40 points in 56 minutes across the two contests. Simons shot 13-for-23 from the floor, including 10-of-17 from three-point range. He signed a two-year, $12.3 million contract last summer. Tyrese Maxey noted that he looked for Simons when the guard was on the court, allowing Maxey to focus on other offensive options.
VJ Edgecombe hit decisive shots in the closing minutes of both games. On Friday, he drained a 27-foot three-pointer with 33 seconds left to give Philadelphia a 94-90 lead. The play started with Maxey setting a pick and bouncing the ball to Edgecombe. On Saturday, Edgecombe hit a step-back three to extend the lead to 105-101 with 36 seconds remaining. Nurse described Edgecombe as a playmaker who thrives in crunch time.
The team will continue managing minutes for Maxey, Edgecombe, and Brown as the season progresses. Simons is positioned to handle increased offensive responsibilities when the starters rest. Nurse credited the team’s focus and energy from day one in training camp for the current success.
