Adam Schwegman faces a total bond of $3 million after being charged with 16 counts in a Topeka crime spree that spanned one night.
The suspect is accused of stabbing three different people and breaking into two residences on S.W. Fillmore and a nearby street.
Police say the incident began about an hour before a bystander spotted Schwegman near Ward Meade Park. At that time, Schwegman had already stabbed two victims along S.W. Fillmore. Booking records also include an allegation of rape at that address.
After the initial stabbings, Schwegman moved up the same road. He broke into two homes. Four children were inside one of the houses, including a four-month-old infant. Officials state the children were not hurt.
A third victim was stabbed on a nearby street. Later, a 70-year-old woman was injured when Schwegman attacked her at Ward Meade Park. Schwegman fled the park and was seen running by Ron Hubbard.
Hubbard said he was with a friend on Wednesday, Oct. 28, when he noticed Schwegman. Hubbard described the suspect as looking unusual. They confronted the man because another bystander had seen him at the park earlier.
Hubbard said he tripped Schwegman, causing the knife to fall in the grass. Hubbard kicked the knife to the sidewalk while his friend held Schwegman. The suspect escaped but was soon caught by police. He was booked into the county jail on 16 charges, including aggravated battery and rape.
Schwegman appeared in court on Thursday, Oct. 29. The judge set the combined bond amount at $3 million.
