Troy has outscored its opponents 65-11 across 18 matches this season, a statistical dominance that carried the team into the Division 1 regional finals for the third consecutive year.

The undefeated Colts defeated Warren Cousino 5-1 in the regional semifinals at Rochester Stoney Creek on Tuesday. The victory secured Troy’s third straight berth in the regional championship game, a milestone the program has not achieved in previous years.

The team’s path to this point reflects a consistent pattern of deep tournament runs. Troy lost to Troy Athens 3-1 in last year’s regional finals. In the 2024 season, the Colts fell to eventual state champion Rochester Adams 1-0 in double overtime. Coach Adam Spinks noted that the current roster includes 10 seniors who have competed at this level since their sophomore year.

“We were in the regional finals the last two years, so these boys have been here before,” Spinks said. “And I’m sure we’ll give a little bit more of an effort than tonight.”

Cousino, an upstart squad with a sophomore-heavy roster, reached the regional semifinals for the second time in school history. The Patriots finished the regular season with an 8-12-1 record and won their district tournament despite a sub-.500 record. Their run ended against Troy’s superior talent, particularly in the second half when the Colts extended their lead.

The scoring began with 32:51 left in the first half. Senior midfielder Mateo Coronado scored off a rebound from a teammate’s initial shot, firing from 15 yards out to give Troy a 1-0 lead. The half ended with that single goal separating the teams.

The second half saw Troy pull away rapidly. With 39:32 remaining, senior Cole Cusmano intercepted a clearing attempt and shot a 27-yard strike into the upper top shelf to make it 2-0. Coronado added a second goal 14 minutes later, corraling a feed from Cusmano and depositing the ball into the bank. Junior Florian Zinn scored twice more, with 16:04 and 12:34 left on the clock, to make it 5-0.

Cousino’s only goal came with 10:33 remaining. Freshman Kamil Sternicki fired a low shot just inside the far post after a flick by sophomore Josh Williams. The Patriots managed only two shots on goal all night compared to Troy’s 18. Troy outshot Cousino 31-2 and held an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Troy will face Utica Eisenhower at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Stoney Creek for the regional championship. Spinks said the team watched game film of Eisenhower earlier in the year and expects a different contest in the tournament setting.

Cousino coach Jordan Wilczak acknowledged the talent gap but pointed to his young roster for future contention. “We’re young but we’ll be back,” Wilczak said. “We have 15 sophomores and three freshmen. Tonight we started two seniors and one junior. The rest of this team will be back next year.”
