Missouri is about to get a significant boost to its offense. Running back Ahmad Hardy is set to make his season debut on Saturday against Arkansas, according to sources who confirmed the news to CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz.

Hardy was wounded by a gunshot in May while attending a concert in Mississippi. His rehabilitation and recovery kept him out of Missouri's first seven games this season, but he has now been cleared to return.

Earlier this week, coach Eli Drinkwitz posted on social media that Hardy had returned to practice, though he stopped short of confirming whether the running back would play. A further sign came Wednesday night, when Hardy did not appear on the Tigers' SEC availability report, which pointed to him being ready for the Razorbacks.

The timing is helpful for a Missouri team coming off an open date. Hardy was among the top running backs in the nation last season. In 2025 he finished second in the country and first among Power Four backs with 1,649 rushing yards, and he scored 16 rushing touchdowns.

In his absence, Jamal Roberts has moved into the lead role in the Missouri backfield and has performed well. Roberts ranks eighth nationally with 867 rushing yards and is tied for 11th with eight rushing touchdowns.

Even so, the team's ground game as a whole has been unspectacular. Missouri averages 161.3 rushing yards per game, ninth in the conference. With Hardy as the featured back in 2025, the Tigers ranked 22nd in EPA per rush and sixth in yards per rush. This season they rank 121st and 74th in those two categories.

The schedule gets tougher after the Arkansas game. Missouri will face Texas, Georgia and Kentucky in a three-game stretch. Two of those defenses are considered elite, and Kentucky is not an easy opponent either. The Tigers will need their offense working well to mount a strong finish to the season.

Having Hardy alongside Roberts could help each back stay fresh and allow Missouri to wear down defenses over four quarters. Combined with a passing game that has done well with Austin Simmons at quarterback, a revived rushing attack could make the Tigers a dangerous team down the stretch.
