Antonio Brown will not go to jail.
The former NFL wide receiver pleaded guilty on Friday to aggravated assault with a firearm. He faces three years of probation instead of prison time. This plea resolves a case that began in May 2025 in Miami.
Brown was originally charged with one count of attempted murder. Police filed that charge after a fight broke out shortly after a celebrity boxing event. He accepted a lesser charge this week. A judge may order him to attend weekly counseling. He will also undergo a mandatory psychological evaluation.
Defense attorney Mark Eiglarsh explained the deal to reporters. "My client was facing 30 years in prison with a 20-year minimum mandatory, and he was given an offer he just couldn't refuse," Eiglarsh said. He added that the probation sentence was a favorable outcome for both the client and his team.
Videos of the altercation spread on social media earlier this year. Photos showed Brown in handcuffs. He responded on social media by claiming a group of people jumped him. "I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me," Brown wrote. He stated that police released him that night and that he was not arrested at the scene.
Brown last played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2021 season. He signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 but never took the field. He filed for bankruptcy in June 2024, citing lawsuits and other financial issues. In 2019, he served an eight-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
From 2010 to 2018, Brown played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He made the Pro Bowl seven times during that span. He was a four-time All-Pro. He played one game for the New England Patriots in 2019 before returning to Tampa Bay for his final two seasons.
