The 2026 midterm elections produced a major shift in power for working families and civil rights advocates, as Democrats captured the Senate after an 11 year wait. President Donald Trump acknowledged this result on Tuesday night, telling Fox News that the Democratic Party executed a good job. The electoral shift flipped seats in several long standing Republican strongholds, with Texas standing out as a key battleground where the tide turned against the incumbent party.

Trump expressed surprise at the final tally, noting that he expected his personal popularity to transfer directly to Republican candidates. He conceded that the results showed otherwise. In a post on Truth Social, the president claimed he would have won a landslide if he had been on the ballot, though he maintained that he did not view the night as a personal defeat because his name was not on the ticket.

The president pointed to the ongoing conflict with Iran as a factor in the GOP struggles. He admitted in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that Iran was a piece of the equation. Despite this, he stated he did not regret the decision to engage in the conflict and would make the same choice again. He also directed criticism at his own party, arguing that some nominees were not acceptable to voters and that the field could have been stronger.

Looking ahead to the legislative session, Trump pledged to use his veto power frequently against the new Democratic majority. He told Fox News he expected to receive bills he deemed insane and was prepared to reject them. He also said the two parties could get along well, but warned the relationship would become tough on both sides if cooperation failed.

During the interview, the president addressed the announcement that the United States would conclude $4 billion in annual aid to Israel by the end of 2026. He described the sum, which includes weapons and other support, as the largest given to any other country. Trump argued that Israel has become quite wealthy and no longer requires such significant assistance. He said he has been discussing the transition with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the past four months and that Netanyahu barely pushed back against the plan.

The president clarified that Israel would retain the ability to purchase weapons from the United States in the future. He recalled telling Netanyahu that Israel could now afford to stand on its own two feet. This move sets the stage for a period of divided government, where the executive branch will face a more adversarial Congress led by the new Democratic majority in the Senate.
