Ninety percent of voters identified the cost of living as the primary factor in their ballot choice. This economic pressure fueled a sweeping Democratic victory in the November 2026 midterm elections. The party took control of both the House and the Senate, dealing a direct blow to President Donald Trump’s administration.

Texas marked the most striking shift in the results. Democrats ended a 38 year run of Republican majorities in statewide offices. James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton to win a US Senate seat. Talarico becomes the first Democrat to hold that position in Texas since 1988. The party also won the governor’s office in the state, a result that broke a four decade streak of Republican dominance.

The surge extended beyond Texas into other traditional Republican strongholds. In Kansas, Adam Hamilton secured a Senate seat, the first for his party there since 1932. Ohio saw Sherrod Brown defeat his Republican opponent. South Carolina elected Annie Andrews to the Senate, a seat the Democrats have not held this century. Political analysts noted that these gains surpassed the projections found in pre-election opinion polls.

Exit polls indicated that voters were dissatisfied with the current direction of the country. Many cited Trump’s tariff policies and the war with Iran as key drivers of their economic anxiety. The Republican base also showed fractures. The party lost support among young voters and Latino voters, two groups that were central to Trump’s 2024 presidential win.

President Trump stated he will accept the election results. He said he is prepared to work with the new Democratic Congress. He noted, however, that he retains his veto powers. The party now faces pressure to address the economic issues that propelled its success in the polls.

The new legislative session is set to begin immediately following the certification of these results. Democrats will hold the majority in both chambers as they prepare to set their initial agenda.
