A U.S. military aircraft fired at a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman on Saturday, disabling the ship. The incident marks the fifth merchant ship disabled by U.S. forces since July. Centcom announced the action on social media, stating that the civilian crew ignored repeated warnings. The command said the vessel attempted to violate the naval blockade against Iran multiple times.

According to the post, the cargo ship had visited an Iranian port before trying to depart regional waters. Centcom detailed its enforcement record in a press release issued on Saturday. Since July, U.S. forces have redirected 147 commercial vessels that complied with orders. Five merchant ships that refused to comply were disabled. The conflict between the United States and Iran is now in its ninth month.

Political fallout from the war intensified after midterm elections on Tuesday. The war was a central focus for voters in that contest. Vice President Vance attributed the Republican defeat directly to the conflict. In a social media post, he stated that the reason for the loss was the war. He noted that the president himself said so during a speech the previous night. Vance argued that losing the Senate for the next six years was a cost to evaluate.

President Trump also acknowledged the war’s impact on the election results. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on election night, he said the conflict was part of the reason the Republican Party faced losses. Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas highlighted the economic burden on voters. He cited high costs for food, gas, diesel, and insurance. Cruz said tariffs made everything too expensive and the Iran war dragged on too long.

A Gallup poll released before the midterms showed how important the war was to voters. Roughly 47 percent of voters said the conflict would be an extremely important issue when casting their ballot. Another 30 percent said it would be very important. The poll data provided a snapshot of public sentiment ahead of the election.

On Friday, the U.S. launched new defensive strikes against Iran. These strikes targeted the country’s air defense systems. President Trump described the action as minor. This was the first strike against the Islamic Republic since the Republicans suffered losses in the midterm elections. Several GOP officials placed blame on the war following the defeat.

Centcom also launched a new podcast titled Inside Centcom on Thursday. The inaugural episode featured Adm. Brad Cooper, the command’s head, and Fleet Master Chief Lateef Compton, its senior enlisted leader. Compton said the show is meant to provide insights into how the command operates. He described the podcast as an opportunity for the American people to get to know the team.
