Kimi Antonelli won the Formula 1 world championship on Sunday in Mexico City, becoming the youngest driver ever to claim the title. He secured the crown in his second season in the sport, ending a championship fight that he controlled for most of the year.
The Mercedes driver finished on the podium alongside Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Both veteran champions, who occupy the top two spots in the all-time record list, offered their praise immediately after the race. Hamilton and Verstappen both described Antonelli's achievement as incredible. Antonelli said he would frame the picture of that podium to display in his home.
Antonelli’s path to the title was not expected by all observers. When Mercedes drafted him last year to replace Hamilton, some questioned his experience. His debut season was shaky and did not match the hype surrounding his talent. Consequently, George Russell, his teammate and the 2025 points leader, was the favorite for the championship at the start of this season.
Antonelli closed the gap rapidly over the winter. He finished first race behind Russell and took his first win in the second round. He followed that with five consecutive victories, taking early control of the championship. He maintained that lead even as Mercedes lost its initial car advantage to rivals.
The performance gap between Antonelli and Russell widened significantly this year. Russell has fallen behind both Verstappen and Hamilton in the points table. Antonelli’s consistency removed much of the jeopardy from the title race, leading to a season defined by one driver’s domination rather than a close contest among the top three.
Verstappen praised Antonelli’s ability to avoid big mistakes and outdrive his experienced teammate. Lando Norris, the outgoing champion, called Antonelli a kind person who drove better than anyone expected. Norris said Antonelli made other drivers look silly by exploiting his car more effectively than any other driver on the grid.
Antonelli credited his difficult first year for preparing him for this success. He said that facing criticism about his readiness made him more mature as a driver and a person. He noted that joining Mercedes directly, under the spotlight, accelerated his growth compared to joining a smaller team.
During qualifying in Mexico, Antonelli admitted he felt tense and less aggressive than in previous races like Austin. He said the pressure of the moment affected his driving. Despite that, he secured the title on the final lap, following Verstappen and Hamilton home.
Antonelli said he was crying on the last lap and lost approximately two seconds because he could not see clearly. He remembered seeing two Ferraris through the tears. After the race, his parents Marco and Veronica greeted him. Marco has been present all season to keep Antonelli grounded.
In the champions' news conference, Antonelli paused to compose himself after thinking of his late grandfather. He said he cried more than expected that day but felt it was good.
