Daniel Jones, 31, appears in court Friday morning on six counts of murder. The Ashland, Oregon, resident is also charged with four counts of felonious assault and one count of tampering with evidence. He remains behind bars at the Lorain County Jail following his Wednesday arrest.
Police responded to a car fire in the Oberlin College Conservatory lot at 8:57 a.m. Wednesday. Officers tracked the vehicle owner, Jones, to check on his welfare and found him at 10:19 a.m. At 10:28 a.m., a second team went to a home in the 30 block of South Pleasant St. to check on Jones's family. They found two people dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Jones was booked into custody at 8:59 p.m. that same evening.
The victims are Pipo Nguyen-Duy, 64, and his 47-year-old stepmother. Nguyen-Duy served as a professor of studio art and photography at Oberlin College for many years. College officials described him as a beloved member of the faculty. The stepmother's name has not been released. Nguyen-Duy's body was found on the first floor, while the female victim was found on the second floor.
Most classes proceeded as usual Thursday. However, Studio Art classes were cancelled to honor the late professor. School officials said plans for a formal memorial have not yet been formed. They noted that opportunities for the campus to gather in remembrance will be provided in the coming days.
